About Us

A community-centered connectivity initiative for Kakuma.

Kakuma Digital Network is being established to help refugees and host communities access affordable internet, digital education and opportunities in the connected world.

Development phase:Development phase — services not yet commercially available

Background

Why KDN was established

Kakuma Refugee Camp and the surrounding host community face persistent barriers to affordable, reliable internet access. For students, households, entrepreneurs and institutions, the digital divide can limit access to learning, markets, services and information.

KDN was established as a proposed independent community-centered social enterprise to address this gap. The initiative aims to combine affordable connectivity with digital inclusion programmes so that access translates into real opportunity.

KDN is currently in its development and establishment phase. It is not yet an operational or licensed internet service provider.

The digital divide in refugee-hosting communities

Connectivity challenges in refugee-hosting areas can include high costs, limited infrastructure, power constraints, device access gaps and low digital literacy. These barriers often affect women, youth, persons with disabilities and small enterprises most strongly.

  • Affordability barriers for households
  • Limited connectivity for schools and learning centres
  • Small business access to digital markets
  • Digital skills and online safety gaps
  • Need for inclusive, community-informed design

Mission

To expand affordable, reliable and inclusive internet access in Kakuma while equipping refugees and host communities with the digital skills to learn, work, trade and participate in the digital economy.

Vision

A connected Kakuma where every household, school, business and community institution can access the opportunities of the digital world with dignity, safety and confidence.
